I have 1 year of part-time tutoring experience in total and have been honing my skills over the course of 3 years.
• June 2023- Ongoing: Tutoring a Sec 4 girl from AMK sec in O Level Eng. She tremendously enjoys lessons and has learnt specific tips to improve in her comprehension skills.
- Feb 2023 – Ongoing: Currently tutoring a Sec 2 Mainland Chinese transfer student in English Lit (Novel Analysis) (4 months, ongoing): Improved tremendously from 60% in past EYEs to 85% in first CT after 4 sessions.
• June 2022 – September 2022: Tutored a P3 boy in person in English Creative Writing for 3 months. Stopped due to university commitments. Although he did not undergo any written examinations during his time with me, he mastered the mountain essay planning technique.
• May 2021: Tutored a P5 girl from CDAC online in Foundation Math for 1 month. Used textbook resources, but learnt to communicate with student with minimal interest in the subject.
Teaching Style:
• Very specialised and tailored to student’s goals and needs. For e.g., my Sec 3 student wanted to explore alternative perspectives to his own in literature, besides scoring well. Tuition can be practice-based and driven by critical feedback, or content based and follows a structured curriculum. I have always incorporated a mix of both for my tutees. I’m flexible to ad-hoc changes in timing, and mode of tuition provided notice is given adequately in advance.
• Very meticulous and structured teaching. I compile and organise your drive of materials, including a weekly timetable to track progress and homework:
• Very concise and in-depth self-crafted study notes for your persual: e.g a Theme & Character document for Novel Analysis.
• Round-the-clock support – I will turnaround ad hoc essays and homework in a day.
• I am familiar with the features of Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Webex.
Techniques I am familiar with:
1. Eng Lit: Novel annotation, Novel Chapter Summaries, Theme, Character, Symbol and Setting summaries, Extract Practice Qns, Essay Practice Qns, Essay Plan Technique (Intro, Body, Conclusion), Essay Techniques.
2. Eng: Self crafted grammar and vocabulary practices from different assessment books
3. Creative Writing: Reading list, Practice to answer prompts
Further experience:
1. Previous assistant resource creator at established tuition centre (Indigo Group) for Sec/JC; created English notes and wrote model English/GP essays, selected critical articles for reading and thought exercises
2. Thorough and ongoing experience in marking secondary english/GP essays
3. Resources from mentors (GP teachers and ex-authors) who have abundant experience in subject
